Storytelling and Commission: Project 1 - From Script to Screen

Through the development of an original three-act story idea for a one minute animation (from initial premise to computer-generated pre-vizualisation via storyboarding), this unit requires you to engage creatively - and efficiently - with the challenges of crafting successful time-based narratives.

As part of the briefing for this project, we all selected three words randomly to give an environment, character and prop for our 1 minute animation.

My words:
Environment: Joke Shop
Character: Contortionist
Prop: Egg

My initial thoughts when receiving these words were that my animation will either be quite dark or a comedy. I feel that my prop is probably going to end up being a prank object in the joke shop.

  1. I don't know why, but when I see 'joke shop' I immediately think that your story might make good use of period detail; there's something a bit 1950s seaside town about the concept of a shop dedicated to whoopee cushions and itching powder. In terms of production design etc. a retro flavour is always useful because it shapes everything for you in a way. That said, I'm also thinking now about the jokeshop in the Harry Potter films - a fantasy joke shop in a fantasy context, which offers up the chance of 'dragon eggs', for example, which changes things completely. One of the most famous 'eggs' (as a goal) is the golden egg laid by the golden goose, which belongs to the giant in 'jack in the beanstalk' - I'm thinking too that 'jumping beans' are just the sort of thing a person might purchase at a tatty, end of pier joke shop...
